A Brat Who Hasn't Been Told To Cut The Act Out. [UPDATED]

(cross posted at Kickin it with CG and Clintonistas for Obama)

As if we needed more evidence that the Right is completely whacked...

Yesterday on his radio show, right winger Michael Savage said that autism is "a fraud" and "a racket" and that "in 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out." Savage then asserted that all these "brat[s]" need as a father to tell them to "stop acting like a putz":

That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, `Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.'" Savage concluded, "[I]f I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, `Don't behave like a fool.' The worst thing he said -- `Don't behave like a fool. Don't be anybody's dummy. Don't sound like an idiot. Don't act like a girl. Don't cry.' That's what I was raised with. That's what you should raise your children with. Stop with the sensitivity training. You're turning your son into a girl, and you're turning your nation into a nation of losers and beaten men. That's why we have the politicians we have."

Savage later claimed that there was "an asthma epidemic amongst minority children" because "the children got extra welfare if they were disabled."

Listen and vomit a little:

Where do they find these guys?

Yeah, especially coming from a blowhard, who, I am going to guess, has no medical training or education in general or about Autism.

After Rush's new contract I guess he figures he has to crank the hate, ignorance, and screaming up a notch to compete in HATE radio.

I really hope this one bites him in the ass, though it probably won't because he linked it with insults of regular adults like "pussies/girly men" and "retarded politicians" which his audience eats up.

I'd like to show Savage that I can be a boneheaded and insensitive male too, by putting my fist in his face and my foot up his ass.

Actually... before Michael Alan Weiner went off the deep end (and several people, myself included, really do think part of it is just an act) and became the total psycho 'Michael Savage', he was a big alternative medicine guy with degrees in botany, anthropology, and a PhD in Ethnomedicine from Berkley.  Seriously.  He spent like twenty years studying traditional medicines in the South Pacific and South America.  Not that that necessarily means much in terms of his knowledge of Autism, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

Yeah, I read that further down below, but the way he speaks about Autism, clearly he is clueless, or intentionally downplaying the disease, probably a mixture of both.  Autism is used here though as a stepping stone to get to his real target of girly men and male sensitivity (code for "gays" and "liberals") which makes it even more disgusting.
It is almost implying that if you are a girly liberal man, your kids will become disabled by your lake of manness in child rearing, and they too will become girly liberal men.

Oh, I think announcing to the world that Obama will probably be in Iraq tonight or tomorrow not only violates Pentagon recommendations and verges on treason either demonstrates that McCain has either already exceeded his mental capacities to lead anything like the military, or that he and his backers have no limits to what they will say or do. I think both are true, actually. The point is to create a mirror of McCain and Republicans for the public so they can see just how repulsive some of them are. At some point we're going to have to force the media to expose McCain and his supporters for what they are - either truly messed up in the head, or unaware of the cesspool McCain plays in.

Radio tough guy (2.00 / 6)

Michael Weiner is more disturbing than the regular AM radio crew, because he truly thinks that he knows what he's talking about when it comes to physical ailments.  He's written several books about herbal remedies and homeopathy, and he's actually written a book called "Healing Children Naturally."  I can only imagine what kind of garbage is in that book after reading that quote about autism.  Sick, sick individual.

He's also got some serious issues if he's so ashamed of his last name that he felt the need to change it to the most masculine, Rambo-esque name he could think of.  I guess he feels that Savage is a lot more palatable than Weiner if all he's going to be offering is hatred and vitriol on a daily basis.

I feel the exact same way.  There are people saying things equal to or more disgusting than the Ann Coulter/Michael Weiner/etc every minute of every day... it's just a fact of life.  The scary thing is that these people have audiences that buy their books, listen to their venom, and actually think to themselves, "Yeah!  Finally someone who tells it how it is!"

I have no doubt that a lot of these talking heads don't even believe the crap that they spout most of the time.  The danger is that their audience does.

Re: Send him into oblivion (2.00 / 1)

"And I say hey...", this is a case where I think the FDA should have the authority to shut down the radio station. In 1957 the FDA ordered the burning of books written by Wilhem Reich because they said they were promoting his unapproved orgonomy devices. Republicans have already started the most repulsive, hateful and disgusting pogrom of spit-flecked hatred they every have. From using the word "Fancy boy" when speaking of Obama, to having some really whacko military men saying they will never kneel in response to Obama's foreign policy plans (to supposedly create a muslim dictated USA) to spreading 100% lie packed rumors about taxes it makes me think that the people behind all this need to be told more than just to shut up. They need professional help very badly.

Re: Send him into oblivion (none / 0)

No disrespect intended, but I gotta tell you I will never agree to burn any book. Ever. I will never try to stop someone from speaking or writing about their beliefs. Ever.

I find your example a bit odd, as Reich seems to be a fairly harmless fellow, who may have been mentally ill, but certainly not worth the bizarre treatment of him.

The bottom line is that I cannot find any reason to burn or ban ideas. In fact I prefer them to be out in the open. After all wind and sunshine are the very best disinfectants.

Re: Send him into oblivion (none / 0)

Say Jeter, do you know anything about Reich? I looked him up after I saw your post and was kind of intrigued by this guy. He sounds a bit nuts, but he believed that he tapped into an unlimited energy source he called orgonomy. It is an odd theory, but there are some who think that he was on to something. What I have been able to discern is that he felt there is a form of energy that is all around us that is generated by emotional and sexual energy. It would seem that he was a victim of FDA concerns about alternative medicine and sexual morals of the time. Many of his contemporaries felt that he had "gone astray or as having succumbed to mental illness".

<Reich was a respected analyst for much of his life, focusing on character structure, rather than on individual neurotic symptoms.[1] He promoted adolescent sexuality, the availability of contraceptives and abortion, and women's economic independence.[24] Synthesizing material from psychoanalysis, cultural anthropology, economics, sociology, and ethics, his work influenced writers such as Alexander Lowen, Fritz Perls, Paul Goodman, Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, A. S. Neill, and William Burroughs.[25]</p>

He was also a controversial figure, who came to be viewed by the psychoanalytic establishment as having gone astray or as having succumbed to mental illness.[24][26] His work on the link between human sexuality and neuroses emphasized "orgastic potency" as the foremost criterion for psycho-physical health. He said he had discovered a form of energy, which he called "orgone," that permeated the atmosphere and all living matter, and he built "orgone accumulators," which his patients sat inside to harness the energy for its reputed health benefits. It was this work, in particular, that cemented the rift between Reich and the psychoanalytic establishment.[17][24][5]

In 1947, following a series of critical articles about Reich's "psychofascism"[27] in The New Republic and his "dubious professional standing"[28] in Harper's, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began an investigation into his claims, and won an injunction against the interstate sale of orgone accumulators. Charged with contempt of court for violating the injunction, Reich conducted his own defense, which involved sending the judge all his books to read, and arguing that a court was no place to decide matters of science. He was sentenced to two years in prison, and in August 1956, several tons of his publications were burned by the FDA.[5][17] He died of heart failure in jail just over a year later, days before he was due to apply for parole.[6]>

(...)

<In 1940, Reich built boxes called orgone accumulators to concentrate atmospheric orgone energy; some were for lab animals, and some were large enough for a human being to sit inside. Reich said orgone was the "primordial cosmic energy", blue in color, which he claimed was omnipresent and responsible for such things as weather, the color of the sky, gravity, the formation of galaxies, and the biological expressions of emotion and sexuality.>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Rei ch

Reich was focussing on this energy as a cure for mental and physical illnesses. Current followers of his theories think humanity will find other uses for this energy .

<Reich's later microscopical experiments with ameba would produce other breakthroughs in the biological sciences, in the discovery of the specific process of bionous decay of tissues, which lay at the basis of cancer cell formation. Reich's findings on cancer are directly observable, and not just some speculative theory -- his observations on pre-cancerous cellular processes significantly predated those of George Papanicolaou (of "Pap-test" fame), and Reich believed his scientific priority had in fact been stolen. Unlike conventional medicine, Reich's discovery also revealed the role of emotional-sexual energy in the psychosomatic process. What at first appeared to be only "bioelectricity" was later clarified by Reich as a much more powerful bioenergetic force -- a form of life-energy at work within living organisms, expressing itself as emotion and sexuality, but also directly observable in the microscope as a bluish-glowing field around living blood cells and other substances. This bluish-glowing energy, which he eventually called orgone energy (to preserve its relationship with living processes), was later observed as a blue-glowing aura-like phenomenon around organisms, trees and even mountain ranges. The blue orgone also exists in a free form within the atmosphere -- Reich wrote about an "envelope" of blue-glowing energy surrounding the Earth long before the first satellite photos confirmed it.</p>

Orgone energy in the atmosphere was a physical phenomenon similar to the older ideas of "vital force" and "aether" combined. It behaves lawfully, fills all space, expands and contracts in pulsatory rhythm, and interacts differently with different material substances: every kind of matter appears to attract the orgone, but at different rates of speed. Water strongly attracts the orgone, or life-energy, giving rise to the phenomenon of living water (described classically as "activated" or "structured" water) which is fundamental to life processes, and to the Earth's weather as well. Orgone was also demonstrated in high vacuum (as with "zero-point" vacuum fluctuation, etc.) proving it filled all space much as a cosmic aether. Reich's experiments in these directions led to even more controversy: new methods for ending drought and greening deserts, and new approaches to the problem of nuclear waste detoxification. His experiments suggested a new source of pollution-free energy, which some day might propel humankind to the stars. Fantastic? Sure, but solidly founded upon new experimental tests and observations in the best tradition of the natural sciences. >
http://www.orgonelab.org/wrhistory.htm

I will need to study this more closely, but it would seem that the FDA halted his work and burned all of his publications and paper they could find. There were tons of material. He went to prison, because he basically refused to defend himself, and died just before he was elegible for parole. He studied under Freud and wrote a book called The Mass Psychology of Facism. The weird part is that I have that book. I must have picked it up years ago because the title intrigued me. I am sure I tried to read the it, but must not have gotten far, because I don't remember anything about the book.

For the most part he seems to be written off as a kook by most sources I could find. I don't know if I can follow the science well enough to ascertain this on my own.

"Hate Hurts America" (2.00 / 4)

This is a website dedicated to opposing Michael Savage and his vile gong-show.

Hate Hurts America keeps track of hate speech by Michael Savage and then informs his advertisers of what is being said under their sponsorship.

This is their mission statement:

Hate hurts America by eroding our country's great traditions of religious and cultural tolerance and mutual respect. Hate-filled words can and do lead to violent actions.
Hate Hurts America is a non-partisan interfaith and community coalition formed by a wide base of religious and civic organizations in an effort to address the rising problem of hatred against American minorities.
While hatemongers have a First Amendment right to spew their hate speech, Americans of all backgrounds also have a First Amendment right not to support hate speech.
The best way conscientious Americans can stop supporting hate speech is to ask responsible companies to pull their advertising dollars from hatemongers.
We therefore call upon companies to withdraw their advertisements from "The Savage Nation" and other hate filled media shows as a concrete demonstration of support for the American traditions of religious and cultural tolerance and mutual respect.

Yup, it's those left-wing libruls and their autistic children (like George Will and his son) who are such a scourge on our society. (That George is a Baltimore Oriole fan and takes his son to the games means I can never get really too mad at him.)

Savage could use his air time to address what I think is a problem in our society, which is the over-prescription of drugs such as Ritalin for kids who are considered "hyper." As someone pointed out in an earlier post, maybe Savage was confusing ADD with autism; I don't think Savage bothers to muddle his already addled brain with the facts. I've known a couple of kids with autism, and their very loving parents, and to think that a mere "cut it out" would solve their problems is beneath contempt.

There has been quite a bit of news about autism recently as people are getting very concerned about the rapid and dramatic increase in cases of autism. The Autism Society of America has pretty good information at their website.

<In February 2007, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued their ADDME autism prevalence report. The report, which looked at a sample of 8 year olds in 2000 and 2002, concluded that the prevalence of autism had risen to 1 in every 150 American children, and almost 1 in 94 boys. The issuance of this report caused a media uproar, but the news was not a surprise to ASA or to the 1.5 million Americans living with the effects of autism spectrum disorder. Nonetheless, the spotlight shown on autism as a result of the prevalence increase opens opportunities for the nation to consider how to serve these families facing a lifetime of supports for their children.>

<Know the Signs: Early Identification Can Change Lives<br> Autism is treatable. Children do not "outgrow" autism, but studies show that early diagnosis and intervention lead to significantly improved outcomes.

Here are some signs to look for in the children in your life:
Lack of or delay in spoken language
Repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects)
Little or no eye contact
Lack of interest in peer relationships
Lack of spontaneous or make-believe play
Persistent fixation on parts of objects>

One of the true nasties, he is.  Him and Hal Turner are among the worst.  They make Sean Hannity seem sensible, which is truly frightening.
